A Josephine’s New Orleans Kitchen Classic
Fluffy, golden Sweet Potato Biscuits or “scones,” as they’re called in the UK, with a touch of cinnamon, nutmeg, and New Orleans soul. Perfect served warm with butter, honey, or Josephine’s Creole Jam.

New Orleans Scones: A Taste of Home — Southern Soul in Every Bite
In Louisiana, we call them biscuits. In the UK, they’d remind you of scones. But wherever you’re from, one bite of these Sweet Potato Biscuits brings that warm, buttery comfort straight from a New Orleans kitchen.
Made with mashed sweet potato, creamy butter, and a whisper of spice — they’re golden, soft, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Serve them with fried chicken, gumbo, or just a drizzle of Josephine’s Honey Butter for a true Southern moment.
Ingredients
(Makes about 12 biscuits / scones)
• 350g cooked sweet potato, mashed (from 1 large, sweet potato)
• 130g unsalted butter, melted (divided – reserve 30g for brushing)
• 2 tbsp whole milk or half-and-half
• 1 large egg, lightly beaten
• ½ tsp vanilla extract
• 2 tsp caster sugar
• ⅛ tsp ground cinnamon
• ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
Homemade Baking Mix Substitute
(Use instead of 2 cups American “all-purpose baking mix”)
• 250g self -raising flour
• ¼ salt
• 2 tbsp butter, melted
Cont. or
• 250g plain flour
• 2 ½ tsp baking powder
• ¼ tsp salt
• 2 tbsp butter, melted
Method
Prep: Preheat the oven to 230°C / 210°C fan / Gas Mark 8. Line a baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
Combine the base: In a large bowl, mix the mashed sweet potato, 100g melted butter, egg, milk, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
Add the dry mix: Stir in the homemade baking mix just until blended. Don’t overmix — the dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
Shape the biscuits (scones): Scoop or roll into rounds about the size of a large egg. Place on the prepared tray with a little space between each one.
Bake: Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown on top and bottom.
Finish: Brush the tops with the remaining melted butter right out of the oven.
Serve warm.
Josephine’s Kitchen Tips
Reheat in a hot oven for a few minutes to bring back that just-baked softness.
For dairy-free, use olive oil or vegan butter and oat milk.
Try them with Honey, Butter or Chilli Jam — sweet, spicy, and perfectly Southern.
Serve it like Josephine
In the UK, they might call these scones, but at Josephine’s New Orleans, we call them pure Southern comfort. A little sweet, a little savoury, and always made with love.
